"Music is not merely art; it is the language through which we speak to the fundamental forces of reality."

TEMPO: Lento e misterioso
To the Novizio, You hold a fragment of the Armonauguria. the sacred art of interpreting the nataclavi. Since the founding of Il Conservatorio degli Stregoni in 1623, we have maintained that music is no mere entertainment, but the very language through which we command the Vis Naturalis.
The Great Attunement. For centuries, the world was monophonic, a singular voice in the dark. It was not until the 11th century, when the monk Guido d’Arezzo captured sound upon the four-line staff, that we began to "store" the power of the heavens. As the Renaissance dawned, our ancestors moved into the Golden Age of Polyphony, learning to weave independent melodies into a singular, resonant force.
The Universal Clockwork Just as the printing press allowed the spread of our lore, the masters of the 17th century began to codify the celestial circle. In 1679, Diletsky gave us the first diagram of the Circle of Fifths, a map for the wandering magician. By 1711, Heinichen had refined this into the clockwork system we use today to illustrate the twenty-four major and minor keys.
We recognize what the "secular" world has forgotten: that astrology, music, and the science of defense all share a singular heart. Tempo. Through this chart, we find the beat of the harmonic universe.
A Warning
If you have stumbled upon this treatise without proper training, without a conductor in hand, without understanding of the dangers inherent in channeling Vis Naturalis through emotion and will stop now.
Music is not merely art. It is not entertainment. It is not a metaphor.
Music is the language through which we speak to the fundamental forces of reality. And reality listens. And reality responds. And reality does not care about your intentions, only your competence.
Harmonic Readings for the Twelve Nataclavi
The universe operates on harmonics, vibrations. It is vibrations that make sound, color, and magic. The art of the Virtuosi utilizes celestial harmony, musical harmony, Timbre, and color to attune and focus magic according to the Seven Laws of Harmonic Magic.
The Armonauguria comes in several varieties including but not limited to:
Horary Attunement the magic of the moment. It is fleeting but distinct. The more elapsed time since the event of interest the less reliable the harmony. Virtuosi that focus on horary attunement as a method of detection e.g. crime scene reading need to do so quickly or the interpretation becomes less reliable.
Nataclavi Attunement the art of reading and interpreting your natal key. Like all complex systems, the best utilization is for direction and understanding and not definitive interpretation.
Harmonic Synesthesia a few highly sensitive Virtuosi or Trovatori are able to augment their readings and spells by using their innate sense of color. These people see the music in a way that most people cannot.
Guardian Cardinal Alignment
Each nataclave is aligned to one of the Four Cardinals — the animating virtues of the Guardian system (I Guardiani delle Virtù). A person's nataclave does not determine which Guardian they may become, but it reveals the domain of virtue most naturally resonant with their harmonic signature. Those born under a given sign find the Cardinal virtue of their nataclave easier to sustain, more instinctive to embody, and more acutely felt when it is weakened or lost.
Note: Three nataclavi align to each of the Four Cardinals, a perfect harmonic division of twelve.
The Sources
In 1679 the Ukrainian composer Nikolay Diletsy wrote Idea grammatiki musikiyskoy (An Idea of Musical Grammar) which is the first known diagram of the Circle of Fifths. He created it for the Novizi of his day as a guide for composers and magicians on how to move (modulate) between keys (armatura) in the new polyphonic music styles.
Several more refinements developed until Johann David Heinichen wrote Musicalischer Circul in 1711. He was the first to codify the circle to illustrate all twenty-four major and minor keys in a circular or clockwork system.
Astrology, dependent on the harmonies of the universe, and also codified in a circle in Western Astrology, became an easy merge for the Conservatory to codify the magical system in one universal chart.
In addition, the Renaissance refined systems of armed combat by applying science. This includes complex measurements of angles and relationships. All three—music, astrology, fencing—utilize tempo to discover or create the beat of the harmonic universe.
Artistically, we must also consider color harmony, which utilizes the harmonics of colors to create the perfect Timbre.
It is the Renaissance recognition of the early masters of the Conservatory that allowed the system to develop the refined state that it is in now. The combination of these varying ways to achieve harmonic resonance creates a great power for the Virtuosi.
The Language of the Virtuosi
It is easy to see that Italy has been either the center or prominent in the development of music, fencing, and magic. While over time the Germans and French have made their contributions, the heart of the system—as was the birth of the Renaissance—is based in Italy. Therefore, the language of the Virtuosi is principally Italian / Latin.
Note: The older Maestri / Virtuosi are adamant that the proper terminology be used. While this can be considered pretentious. Younger, more modern Virtuosi have reduced the usage of complex terminology.
The Two-Stone System
The color palette for harmonic perception is derived from zodiac birthstones. Each person's nataclave— their birth-key—determines the color, quality, and character of their armatura as perceived through a trained Timbre.
Each sign carries two stones across two traditions:
-
Primary stone. The modern birthstone most commonly associated with the sign; the source of Timbre color as perceived by a trained reader
-
Ancient stone. The historical zodiac stone in use from antiquity through the Renaissance, non-Maestri can refer to Kunz's Curious Lore of Precious Stones (1913)
The relative minor of each major key carries a secondary modern stone — the inward, shadow expression of the same signature.
Harmonic Signatures
Just as astronomers of history got to the point that they read birth charts as a source of income, Virtuosi also distilled the system of nataclavi into Harmonic Signatures or the watered-down summaries much like generic horoscopes.
Virtuosi use these in the same way. Often they are entertainment that helps the Statics (non-musical, non-magical) to accept Virtuosi without fear. Sometimes they earn money for this. This is not much different than the Virtuosi who play at weddings, Bat-mitvahs, et cetera, and use subtle harmonic pressure to assert Joy or Peace or whatever emotion augments the occasion.
A note on the terminology.
Major Keys: These keys represent the outward, public harmonic signature.
Minor Keys: (relative minor): Also Shadow Keys. Represent the natives inner, hidden nature or expression.
Ruler: each key/sign has a planetary ruler based on the astrological cosmic harmony. Some have a modern ruler and an ancient ruler. This can result in some interpretation issues in research as some documents may sense the alternate energy but not be able to name it yet.
For the nine signs that only have one planetary ruler, both major and minor expression are governed by that planet. Those individuals possess a unified nature without an interior/exterior split in their harmonic signature.

*A note on planetary rulers for Scorpio (Pluto), Aquarius (Uranus), and Pisces (Neptune). These planets were not discovered until post Renaissance. Research and analysis should take into account traditional rulers only when dealing with historical documents pre-1781 (Uranus), pre-1846 (Neptune), and pre-1930 (Pluto))
